FOR 2013-2014 CONCERT SEASON
Members of Ars Nova Singers are highly-skilled musicians with extensive experience in choral singing. We welcome the opportunity to hear and connect with singers who share our passion for the choral art. Auditions for the 2013-2014 season are now complete. However, we will still audition interested singers throughout the year; contact Tom Morgan, Artistic Director (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Auditions and rehearsals are held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1419 Pine Street in downtown Boulder.
WHO WE ARE
Specializing in a cappella music of the Renaissance and the 20th and 21st centuries, the Ars Nova Singers of Boulder, Colorado is presenting its 28th concert season in 2013-2014. The ensemble is composed of 36 selectively auditioned choral musicians from the Denver/Boulder metropolitan region. In its history, Ars Nova has presented over 300 performances of more than 100 different concert programs.
The season schedule has been announced and is available on this website. Rehearsals are held Thursday evenings, from 7:30-10:00 p.m., with occasional Tuesday rehearsals (especially in concert weeks). The rehearsals will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church in downtown Boulder.
Singers are expected to participate in every program during the season. However, if you are aware of a conflict in your year, please inform us at the audition. In assessing the roster for the season, the following apply to all auditionees:
1) Priority consideration will be given to singers who commit to the entire season.
2) Priority will be given to singers who have completed both Levels 1 & 2 of the Estill Voice Training System.
THE ESTILL VOICE TRAINING SYSTEM
The Ars Nova Singers are pioneering the choral implementation of the Estill VoiceTraining System. In June, 2006 we sponsored our first national workshop in the Estill model, and in 2007-2008, Ars Nova took the unique step of investing in significant training for all of our singers.
The implications of this for our singers are manifold, and include this two primary points:
1) For participation in the full ensemble, Ars Nova expects all singers to be willing to acquire a basic understanding of the model, its terminology, and implementation. Where this technique departs from an individualâ€™s previous voice training, it is expected that singers will be supportive of the Estill model.
2) Singers may expect to receive specific, individual support for vocal issues, and practical techniques for furthering their vocal development.

PAID SINGERS - Section Leaders (4 people), Choral Pros (variable number, depends on the program)
We are a semi-professional ensemble, in that we have a paid core of professional singers who serve as section leaders. These are trained, professional musicians with extensive vocal and choral experience, and since the institution of this paid core of singers in 1993, these people have been a significant factor in our artistic improvement. Over the past several seasons, the section leaders have assumed more responsibility for the musical preparedness of their sections, the divisi assignments, and the balance and blend of their sections. The section leaders are paid for every service, both rehearsals and performances. Section leaders are required to have completed Estill Level I training. These positions are rarely open to singers who have not performed with the ensemble in previous seasons.
OTHER PAID POSITIONS: Choral Pros. A limited number of positions are available for highly skilled choral professionals who learn the repertoire independently and join the ensemble for the final 3-4 rehearsals of a program. These positions require considerable experience in both choral and solo work, and advanced reading and ensemble skills. Choral Pros are paid for every service, both rehearsals and performances.
THE AUDITION PROCESS
The auditions consists of an individual audition/interview held one-on-one with Ars Nova Artistic Director Thomas Edward Morgan. Auditions for non-paid positions consist of a variety of vocal exercises testing various aspects of the voice and the singer's musicianship: range, color, vowel production, register transitions, pitch accuracy, and sight reading. If possible, please also bring a prepared solo piece from the art song, oratorio, or opera repertoire. To be considered for ANY PAID POSITION, please submit an audition recording (mp3 format), demonstrating current or recent solo work; the recording may include either excerpts or complete pieces.
